Near The End

We managed to make it to the dam today - first
occasion in six weeks we’d weathered the idea,
lasted th’ distance & remained okay; but cogent
reasons for a celebration are as elusive as free
beers come Shrove Tuesday; there’ll likely be a
penance with fasting lent, and Ash Wednesday
will mark the beginning again, as in that ‘outrez'
analysis we’re now ‘free’ of Ross River* fever -

But we’ll keep the faith gladly; the affliction has
faded from first rank to a background buzz with
less colloquial prankishness than the jokes win
applause for; we actually feel there’s an end in
store - even a new beginning, maybe shrewdly
disguised as an old and abandoned routine
