Dick was different, & in the nicest way: pleasant,
amenable and a damn good mate. After Portsea
over the years we’d served together, Burnham’s
where a lot of us got in unison, then inevitably in
Headquarters, & there - Staff Officer parole had
us see things with our own inimitable bent; that
we survived said comradeship had prepared us,
making us aware of its most essential essence
And Richard that was so evident in you - who in
truth gave us all a leg to stand upon, - were you
a lesser man we wouldn’t have seen the woods
or the trees, or remember those jokes you used
to express about who’s knees were shaking; we
will miss you old mate - yes, sorely miss you …
