Crikey

So he says ‘Crikey, I didn’t know that,’ which we
knew anyway; but you couldn’t say it out aloud -
it’s an event hidden in the cloud we’re supposed
to know ‘filters out’ all those sorts of comments

Yeah, mate, you’re innocent of anything criminal,
with the exception of ignorance - although that’s
no defence, given you agreed with the hierarchy
approving your job, expenses - and salary to be

Which’s why loyalty to the cause is an indemnity
against being accused of negligence; except, in
a sense, you’re still Patsy for later use, or if they
find a need to hang a loose goose on the fence

So why’re you relating this stuff t’ me he pleads,
I’m just a Party pleb who’s keen to represent th’
Constituents’ electing me; & if there’s decadent
tricks afoot, why isn’t it The Party who tells me

And there is where we cease the interview; truth
be told - you would not want to believe it is true,
no form of immunity f’ breeze-shooting like this
exists; altho, and as if, we didn’t know that too
